History Documentary

Burma and the Second World War

The concept of a whole world convulsed by war is hard to comprehend. Yet the horrors of this catastrophic event are still within the living memory for many. And its outcome continues to shape our political landscape today.

The War in Europe has been well documented. Less well known are the part British forces played in Asia fighting the Japanese. The ‘Forgotten Army’ as it became known was the largest Commonwealth force in the Second World War. Nearly a million men from Britain and the Commonwealth fought against a determined Japanese enemy that had taken control of the Pacific and most of South East Asia.

Burma was one of the pivotal countries in the battle to stop the Japanese advance. In what was to become the longest fighting withdrawal in the history of the British Army, the retreating troops faced huge problems with sickness and disease, an impenetrable jungle, poor roads and constant bombing and strafing from the Japanese Air Force. They shared the retreat with thousands of civilian refugees fleeing northwards to India to escape the threat of Japanese brutality. There were many men from Wolverhampton and the Black Country who fought in this campaign.

Don Clark began an ambitious project - several years ago - to film interviews with the remaining veterans before it was too late. An amazing picture of bravery, sacrifice and heroism emerged in what is now over 100 hours of footage.

What became apparent was that these men’s stories would make a fascinating feature length documentary. Don asked international film maker Paul Oremland to help develop the project. Paul, who has worked extensively for the UKTV history channel and many other broadcasters, suggested the film should involve some of the grandchildren. This generation have no direct experience and little understanding of the politics or beliefs that fuelled their grandfather’s determination to fight in the Second World War.

We are now looking for volunteers to help make this documentary. They should be interested in history and curious to find out how it shapes our world today. It will involve a bit of research and some weekend filming. But it should be an enjoyable experience and the participants’ will be expected to help shape the final documentary.
